  • In Spain, Facebook outage started later than in other European countries. Italy has been the first country to completely recover Facebook connectivity.
  • Over 7,000 devices deployed across Europe allow to measure the Quality of Service in real-time and anticipate massive outages.
  • The Spanish company monitors the evolution of the service interruption for telecom operators.

MedUX technology has anticipated Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram outages, which has left millions of users worldwide without access to their accounts on Wednesday, 13th of March. These kinds of service interruptions, as well as other technical problems, can occur at any time and can seriously damage the end-users experience, so it is essential to detect them in advance. MedUX, the leading company in measuring telecommunications User Experience, detects a wide range of incidents that affect the service that customers receive, from Quality of Service problems and network incidents, to degradation of services such as social networks, messaging platforms, Internet browsing or video streaming. Over 7,000 MedUX HOME devices deployed in Europe allow to measure in real-time the quality of fixed broadband networks and telecommunications services. The objective is to analyze the quality of broadband services from the end-user perspective. MedUX monitors the most used services such as applications - WhatsApp or Facebook (known as OTT applications, Over The Top)- from the general public perspective. In addition, the analytical capabilities of the ecosystem allow to locate and solve problems related to quality. Regarding Facebook outage, MedUX has observed an exponential decline in Facebook's download capabilities in several European countries on March 13, from 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM (CET). The identified bit loss points out that Facebook's real-time content was not available at that moment, so affected users could only access old content. The following graphs show the interruption of the Facebook service in different countries, obtained thanks to MedUX reliable measurements. The data indicates that the interruption of Facebook service in Spain started later than in other countries in Europe, while Italy was the first to return to normal. In Portugal and Ireland the platform connection fluctuated at first until the service interrupted. Germany was the last country to recover the 100% of Facebook connectivity.

These events show how unforeseen these failures can be, in both services and telecom networks, and how much they can affect the user's satisfaction. In fact, some of the most searched words on Google in some European countries since Wednesday (for example: "facebook down" or "whatsapp problems"), evidence how important is to keep users satisfied through a good Quality of Experience.

It also happened on Twitter, where the hashtag #facebookdown was placed on the 23th position in the global trending topics ranking, #instagramdown was the 26th and "Facebook and Instagram" was on the 30th position. MedUX detects these events from the end-user perspective and allows operators and service providers to anticipate complaints and incidents, by improving the Quality of Service offered to their customers and increasing their satisfaction. "Anticipating these kind of incidents is key to improve the bottom-line of telecom operatos. Information is an enabler to prevent and solve future interruptions, review technical and commercial strategies of these companies and make informed and right decisions. We have observed that proactive management of User Experience is becoming a key driver in the differentiation and strategic positioning of operators”, explains Rafael González Galarreta, CMO at MedUX.
