Why is Fixed Broadband Quality of Experience (QoE) Benchmarking important in Spain and beyond?

Delivering superior broadband connectivity has become essential in today’s highly competitive landscape, where a seamless and consistent experience underpins our digital lives. Spanish operators continue to invest to meet the growing demand for fast, stable and reliable Fixed Broadband.

A high-quality broadband experience not only improves customer satisfaction, but also drives loyalty and reduces churn. Satisfied users are less likely to switch providers or contact customer support, and are far more open to new value-added services. The race for network excellence and customer-centric performance is stronger than ever.

To shed light on the real Quality of Experience of fixed broadband networks, MedUX carried out a new in-depth benchmarking study during Q1 2026, assessing the performance of the main Internet Service Providers in Spain.

The new Q1 2026 results show that Orange not only maintains its leadership, but improves its overall QoE performance, reaching 4.86 out of 5. Movistar also reaches an Outstanding experience level, Digi remains a strong challenger, and Vodafone continues to compete in specific performance categories.

As the leading company in network quality Testing and Monitoring, MedUX continues to drive transparency and innovation, revealing the true state of Spain’s fixed broadband networks and their readiness for a future-proof digital ecosystem.

Fixed Broadband QoE Measurement Campaign in Spain

To accurately capture how broadband networks perform from the end-user perspective, MedUX conducted an extensive Fixed Broadband Quality of Experience measurement campaign across Spain during the first quarter of 2026. The study was designed to reflect real-life usage conditions, going beyond traditional speed or latency tests to evaluate what truly matters to consumers: a seamless, reliable and enjoyable digital experience.

Our rigorous methodology combines thousands of in-home performance measurements across Spain, using MedUX HOME MiniPC-based probes that execute continuous, automated tests under controlled and comparable conditions. This approach enables a holistic and independent view of how users actually experience broadband connectivity in their daily activities.

The campaign evaluated a wide range of key performance indicators, including Accessibility, Reliability, Matching the Promise, Streaming Experience, Gaming, Web Browsing, Social Media, Cloud Storage, HTTP Download, HTTP Upload and other Data & OTT services.

In total, the Q1 2026 campaign collected approximately 8.0 million tests, around 2.7 million samples per month, and approximately 2 million samples per operator between January and March 2026. The measurement period covered weeks 1 to 13 of the year.

Considering the current state of FTTH penetration in Spain, the study focused on Fiber to the Home, the dominant fixed access technology in the Spanish market. The panel covered the four main operators in Spain and used at least 45 FTTH users per operator.

The household panel reflects representative high-speed broadband profiles in the Spanish market. According to the campaign description, the study measured commercial FTTH services using common routers and high-speed plans, with contracted speeds ranging between 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps.

Powered by MedUX’s unique QoE Testing Platform, the campaign operates 24/7, performing millions of Ethernet-based tests from MedUX HOME devices installed in collaborating households. Each measurement provides real-world, unbiased evidence of how networks perform from the customer’s perspective.

As in the previous edition, the research focuses on Ethernet-based measurements, ensuring that results reflect the true performance of fixed broadband connections independently of in-home Wi-Fi conditions. This allows MedUX to evaluate the FTTH network and broadband service performance under comparable and controlled conditions.

MedUX QoE Score and rigorous methodology

The Spain Fixed Broadband QoE Benchmarking Report takes a detailed look at the overall Quality of Experience Score, an aggregated indicator combining key dimensions such as service Accessibility, Matching the Promise, Streaming Experience, Data & OTT and Reliability.

At the heart of this methodology is MedUX’s proprietary QoE Scorecard, a synthetic indicator that aggregates dozens of individual metrics into a single, comparable measure of network and service performance. This enables national and international benchmarking, offering operators and regulators a clear, data-driven understanding of strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement in Spain’s fixed broadband landscape.

MedUX’s fixed broadband benchmarking methodology evaluates both network performance and end-user experience, with criteria and thresholds reviewed periodically to reflect sector best practices, technological evolution and international recommendations. MedUX uses the Mean Opinion Score concept for most classifications, algorithmically estimated from test results and KPIs, in line with ETSI TR 103 559 V1.2.1 and ITU-T Recommendation P.800.1.

This methodology allows MedUX to transform technical measurements into perceptual indicators, considering how users actually experience improvements or degradations in fixed broadband services.

Why QoE Matters

Quality of Service has long been the industry standard, but MedUX’s focus shifts towards Quality of Experience: a more holistic view of network performance that connects technical indicators with what users actually perceive.

In an advanced FTTH market such as Spain, nominal speed is no longer enough to explain customer satisfaction. Users rarely consume the full theoretical capacity of their broadband plan when browsing the web, watching a video, using cloud services or interacting on social media. What really matters is whether the service is available, responsive, stable and consistent across the applications people use every day.

That is why QoE benchmarking is becoming a strategic tool for operators, regulators and digital ecosystem players. It helps identify where networks perform well, where experience can be improved, and how operators compare under controlled and transparent conditions.

For operators, QoE benchmarking supports network optimization, customer experience management, competitive intelligence and marketing claims based on independent evidence. For consumers, it contributes to transparency and trust. For the wider telecom ecosystem, it provides a common framework to evaluate how connectivity performs in real life.

Conclusion

The Q1 2026 Spain Fixed Broadband QoE Benchmark confirms that Orange continues to set the benchmark for fiber broadband experience in Spain.

After leading the previous Q2 2025 benchmark, Orange maintains MedUX’s Top Award for Best Fixed Broadband Quality of Experience, improves its overall QoE Score to 4.86 out of 5, and remains present in the leadership or co-leadership of all major service categories.

The campaign also confirms the high level of competition in Spain’s FTTH market, with Movistar, Digi and Vodafone showing strong performance in specific categories.
