Key Highlights of the 5G QoE Benchmarking Study Across Europe

This benchmark will allow industry stakeholders to gain a deeper understanding of the true performance of 5G networks from a customer perspective.
MedUX invites both private and public stakeholders from across Europe to participate in this 5G QoE Benchmarking campaign.

  • Invitation for Participation and Scope Extension: Stakeholders can request an extension to include cities of their interest.
    • Private stakeholders are welcome to request an extension of the scope to include new testing locations of their interest, expanding the reach of the study and ensuring broader insights into the state of 5G networks in Europe.

    • Public stakeholders—such as regulators, national and regional governments, and city halls—are invited to participate as part of our MedUX Impact program (a non-profit initiative), helping transform connectivity for societal progress.

  • City Coverage: The campaign will assess the 5G performance of major European cities, including London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, and others.
  • Mobile Experience Awards: Major cities will be evaluated for 5G reliability, accessibility, and user experience metrics, for the mobile experience awards recognizing best-performing cities.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Real-world 5G measurements will offer a deep understanding of how networks perform from the user’s perspective, enabling operators and regulators to make informed decisions and data-driven improvements.
  • High-quality 5G networks: Much of Europe’s 5G coverage has been relying on technologies like Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS), and it is gradually transitioning from initial non-stand-alone (NSA) to stand-alone (SA) deployments. 5G flavors in low-, and mid-band spectrum will be evaluated.

Why should stakeholders engage in our 5G QoE Benchmarking campaign?

The advent of 5G networks in Europe has significantly reshaped mobile connectivity, offering faster speeds, lower latency, and greater reliability. However, the true test lies in the 5G Quality of Experience (QoE) it delivers to users.

  • Wake-up call for policymakers, regulators, operators, and stakeholders across Europe to act now: According to recent Draghi’s report, but also the latest 5G Observatory Report  , the Broadband Coverage Study  and State of the Digital Decade 2024  review, Europe’s digital infrastructure could lag behind the leaders in North America, Middle East and Asia Pacific in terms of 5G rollout, adoption and quality.
  • Having access to good quality data, from drive testing campaigns and crowdsourcing, helps make informed decisions. Regulators and Operators across the globe use QoS (Quality of Service) and QoE metrics to audit, monitor, plan and optimize 5G network performance. As private and public stakeholders alike face the challenge of boosting the deployment of ubiquitous high-quality Networks for a competitive digital future, having insights into how users are experiencing the network is essential.
  • Understanding the fine print of 5G deployments. With promises of faster speeds, lower latency, and greater reliability, 5G has the potential to revolutionize the way we live, work, and play. However, the true measure of 5G's success lies not in its technical specifications, but in its implementation, the experience it provides to end users, and the use cases.
  • What use cases can 5G deployments can bring? 5G rollouts have mostly focused on providing enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB, higher data bandwidth) and more reliable connectivity, and will enable services such as ultra HD 4K-8K video streaming, augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) and an immersive media experience. Soon, full-fledge 5G rollouts will also support Network Slicing, Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC) and massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC).

Key findings from previous editions on 5G QoE and QoS Benchmarking

Over the past two years, MedUX has transformed the landscape of 5G QoE benchmarking and how we perceive connectivity. Our reports have set new standards for measuring and understanding the true quality of 5G networks from a customer’s perspective.

  • First Edition
In our first research study, Lisbon showed excellent 5G performance and experience compared to other European cities. MedUX was honored to give the Best QoE Award for Lisbon to representatives of the Portuguese Delegation, such as Mario Campolargo, Secretary of State for Digitalization and Administrative Modernization in Portugal, and Members of the Board at Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM), the Portuguese regulator, such as João Cadete de Matos and Patrícia Silva Gonçalves.
Not only important media outlets echoed our report, such as the Jornal de Negocios or O Jornal Económico, but also raised great interest among major operators in Europe.

  • Second Edition
In our second research study, Berlin was the winner of the most important category and our Best QoE Award, showing outstanding stability across most mobile experience categories and KPIs. Barcelona and Paris followed closely in the second and third place of Best QoE. We were honored to have the German Delegation led by Dr Wilhelm Eschweiler, VP of BNETZA, receiving the Award of the Best 5G network for Berlin.

We also took a closer look at London with our dedicated campaign, "London's 5G Dilemma: EE Outshines Locally, but London's Average Experience Is Worst Among European Cities." This study provided a detailed view of London’s 5G landscape, revealing EE as an outstanding performer while highlighting significant gaps in London’s average 5G experience compared to other European cities. CNBC and other relevant media outlets echoed our report.
