Unlocking the Power of the Crowd: MedUX’s Global QoE Crowdsourcing Solution

In an increasingly digital world, network performance is no longer just a technical concern—it’s a business and societal imperative. At MedUX, we believe that understanding real-world connectivity requires more than just traditional testing tools. That’s why we’ve expanded our Quality of Experience (QoE) ecosystem to include one of the most advanced, scalable and insightful crowdsourcing solutions available today.
Do you really know what network technologies people actually use every day?
Is 5G already the dominant technology in your country? Are most users enjoying the benefits of Wi-Fi 6? The answers might surprise you.
In an era where connectivity is critical for economic development, digital inclusion, and customer satisfaction, these questions are more than just technical trivia—they’re essential to making smart decisions. And yet, many regulators, operators, smart cities and enterprises still lack real, granular visibility into what users actually experience on the ground.
That’s why we built MedUX Crowdsourcing: a real-time Quality of Experience (QoE) measurement platform that leverages millions of everyday devices to uncover what connectivity and OTT digital services really feels like—wherever users are, whatever network they’re on.
Before we show you how it works, let’s look at a few insights from our latest global measurement campaign. Spoiler: 5G and Wi-Fi 6 adoption might not be as widespread as you think…

As shown above, our MedUX QoE Crowdsourcing intelligence reveals that 4G remains the most used mobile technology in Europe, North America, and Latin America.
it's important to clarify that MedUX’s embedded technology enables non-intrusive active tests executed silently in the background. These tests provide real, ground-level measurements of QoE and OTT service performance, delivering highly accurate, user-centric insights without disrupting device operation or user experience.

As reflected in our crowdsourced data, Wi-Fi 4 continues to be the most prevalent standard across Europe, North America, and Latin America considering the time spent connected to the different standard generations. Despite the increasing availability of Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6, adoption remains uneven, suggesting that device and router capabilities—as well as regional investment cycles—play a significant role in Wi-Fi performance and user experience.
Wi-Fi 7 is not included in our analysis at this stage due to its extremely limited adoption. As a recently introduced technology, current usage is mostly confined to early adopters—partly due to the high price of compatible devices and routers. Considering the billions of older-generation Wi-Fi devices still in use and being sold today, it will take time for Wi-Fi 7 to gain critical mass. This is clearly reflected in our dataset where Wi-Fi 7 connections are negligible taking into account the total observed traffic in Q1 2025.
Let’s continue with another question: Do you know what is the percentage of 4K Ultra HD video used when it comes to streaming?

Read the blog and register to get early access to our upcoming benchmarking reports and exclusive QoE insights.
A deeper look into our streaming experience measurements reveals that Wi-Fi networks are the primary enabler of 4K Ultra HD video playback - especially in Europe (55.8%) and North America (51.5%). In contrast, mobile networks still lag behind, showing significantly lower proportions of 4K playback. This highlights potential limitations in mobile network capacity and performance under real-world usage.
To capture this insight, MedUX crowdsourcing—via embedded technology running directly on end-user devices—executes real active playback tests, launching actual video sessions on platforms like YouTube. These tests capture key metrics such as resolution (e.g., HD, Full HD, 4K/UHD), buffering events, playback duration, and time to start. This ensures that we accurately measure whether videos are truly played at their maximum available quality, under real network and device conditions—offering a trustworthy view of streaming capability.
This reinforces the value of combining QoE data with rich technological context (radio access type, device type, location, network type) to fully understand how connectivity conditions influence real-world streaming performance across regions.
What Problems Does MedUX Crowdsourcing Solve?
Traditional testing methods often leave major gaps when it comes to understanding what users actually experience on the ground. MedUX Crowdsourcing helps close that gap—solving key challenges for regulators, telecom operators, digital enterprises and Smartcities alike:
- Limited visibility across regions and technologies
Most testing solutions don’t capture enough real-world data across different geographies, network types, and user segments. Our crowdsourcing solution collects continuous insights from millions of users—urban and rural, fast 5G and legacy 3G, Wi-Fi, entry-level and flagship devices. - No direct view of user perception
Lab tests and drive tests don’t reflect what users truly experience every day. MedUX Crowdsourcing offers a customer-centric perspective by capturing Quality of Experience (QoE) directly from user devices—revealing the impact of buffering, loading times, low speeds, network related problems, etc. - Slow, inefficient troubleshooting
Traditional network diagnostics can be reactive and time-consuming. With real-time data and contextual signals (device, location, user-centric tests, time), MedUX enables faster root cause analysis and more proactive issue resolution. - Outdated insights from one-off campaigns
Benchmarking campaigns often take months and fail to reflect network changes in real time. Our solution provides always-on monitoring—capturing dynamic performance variations as they happen, across days, seasons, or events, in contrast to “static” network snapshots. - Regulatory blind spots and inclusion gaps
Rural and underserved areas are often left out of the equation. Crowdsourcing helps fill that void by collecting data from real users in remote regions—supporting more inclusive and evidence-based public policies. - Lack of fair and standardized benchmarking
Operators and regulators often struggle to compare performance across networks or services using consistent criteria. MedUX delivers objective, standardized QoE metrics—enabling apples-to-apples benchmarking. - Unverified marketing or product claims
Many service claims remain unproven. With our solution, providers can back their promises with independent, certifiable insights based on real user experience. - No insights into evolving trends
With digital services and usage patterns changing fast, historical data alone isn't enough. MedUX captures real-time performance trends across QoE tests, devices, and regions—helping stakeholders stay ahead of emerging issues and opportunities.
