Why is Fixed Broadband Quality of Experience (QoE) Benchmarking Important in Spain and Beyond

Delivering superior broadband connectivity has become essential in today’s highly competitive landscape, where a seamless and consistent experience underpins our digital lives. Spanish operators are investing heavily to meet the ever-increasing demand for fast, stable, and reliable Fixed Broadband.

A high-quality broadband experience not only enhances customer satisfaction but also drives loyalty and reduces churn. Satisfied users are less likely to switch providers or contact customer support, and are far more open to new value-added services. The race for network excellence and customer-centric performance is stronger than ever.

To shed light on the real Quality of Experience (QoE) of fixed broadband networks, MedUX carried out an in-depth benchmarking study during Q2 2025, assessing the performance of major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Spain. This analysis offers valuable insights into how operators deliver on their promises and how Spain positions itself among Europe’s most advanced broadband markets.

As the leading company in network quality Testing and Monitoring, MedUX continues to drive transparency and innovation, revealing the true state of Spain’s fixed broadband networks and their readiness for a future-proof digital ecosystem.

Fixed Broadband QoE Measurement Campaign in Spain

To accurately capture how broadband networks perform from the end-user perspective, MedUX conducted an extensive Fixed Broadband Quality of Experience (QoE) measurement campaign across Spain during Q2 2025. The study was designed to reflect real-life usage conditions, going beyond traditional speed or latency tests to evaluate what truly matters to consumers: a seamless, reliable, and enjoyable digital experience.

Our rigorous methodology combines thousands of in-home performance measurements across 15 regions in mainland Spain, using MedUX HOME devices that execute continuous, automated tests under controlled and comparable conditions. This approach enables a holistic and independent view of how users actually experience broadband connectivity in their daily activities.

The campaign evaluated a wide range of key performance indicators (KPIs) — including accessibility, reliability, contracted speed compliance, streaming, gaming, and other data & OTT services. In total, more than 6 million tests were performed across Spain’s major fixed broadband operators: Orange, Movistar, Vodafone, and Digi.

Considering the current state of FTTH penetration in Spain, the study focused primarily on the dominant fixed access technology, Fiber to the Home (FTTH), and on the most representative ISP packages, with speeds typically ranging between 600 Mbps and 1 Gbps. This selection reflects the service tiers most commonly contracted by Spanish households and provides a realistic picture of everyday broadband performance.

Powered by MedUX’s unique QoE Testing Platform, the campaign operates 24/7, performing millions of Ethernet-based tests each month from over 200 MedUX HOME devices installed in collaborating households across the country. Each measurement provides real-world, unbiased evidence of how networks perform from the customer’s perspective

Our research on residential fixed broadband in Spain (Q2 2025) focuses exclusively on Ethernet-based measurements, ensuring that results reflect the true performance of fixed broadband connections, independently of in-home Wi-Fi conditions. For this report, data collected between April and June 2025 was analyzed to provide a representative view of the Spanish broadband market.

The Spain Fixed Broadband QoE Benchmarking Report takes a detailed look at the overall Quality of Experience (QoE) Score, an aggregated indicator combining key dimensions such as service accessibility (time-to-content), downlink and uplink speeds, file transfer performance, web browsing, streaming quality, and social media and gaming experiences. Together, these metrics capture how broadband users actually experience connectivity in real-world conditions.

Behind these results lies the work of MedUX’s experienced team of engineers and data scientists, who have developed a rigorous, field-proven methodology for testing and benchmarking fixed broadband networks across Europe. Our approach adheres to international best practices and standards from ETSI and ITU, ensuring comparability, reliability, and transparency across markets.

At the heart of this methodology is the MedUX proprietary QoE Score, a synthetic indicator that aggregates dozens of individual metrics into a single, comparable measure of network and service performance. This enables both national and international benchmarking, offering operators and regulators a clear, data-driven understanding of strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement in Spain’s fixed broadband landscape.

Why QoE Matters

Quality of Service (QoS) has long been the industry standard, but MedUX's focus shifts towards QoE - a more holistic view of network performance. This shift is crucial in understanding the real-world implications of future-proof technology, especially as the industry navigates towards the 2030 connectivity targets part of the EU's Digital Decade goal. It is key to accelerate deployment and investment in future-proof infrastructures.

In our continuous effort to demystify fixed broadband performance, MedUX employs its innovative mobile measurement technology, MedUX HOME, harnessing over 200 performance indicators and metrics. This approach not only offers an in-depth analysis of network performance but also aligns with our mission to assist clients in planning, deploying, monitoring, and optimizing future-proof networks.

Our fixed broadband QoE benchmark can cover a wide range of scenarios and use cases, including urban, suburban, and rural areas, residential and business locations, or any other strategic locations such as airports, stadiums or conference centres, thanks to our grand-scale flexible deployment capability.

MedUX focuses on evaluating the QoE that fixed end-users have when using telecommunication services, also called customer-perceived network quality or network experience.

What Do You Get Joining the #QoERevolution with MedUX?

This benchmark allows telecommunications operators, service providers, and regulatory authorities to gain a deeper understanding of the true performance of fixed broadband networks from a customer perspective.

Speed is not everything and the industry is trying to adapt to meet the needs of customers when using real services. Typical end-users do not necessarily benefit much from download speeds of multiple 100 Mbps (not yet). High-demand users could benefit from 300 Mbps with symmetric downlink and uplink speeds to guarantee an uncompromising satisfactory experience on any online activity see our Blog Post “How fast is enough to enjoy our #StayAtHome?”.

End-users just use a small percentage of those headline speeds when web browsing, streaming, and any other regular internet activities. Indeed, Reliability (how consistent a network performs) or CDN performance (how your contents are served) is way more relevant in the Digital Era than just performing a throughput and ping test against an (optimized) test server to infer the customer experience.

So, what do users care about in general when it comes to advanced connectivity? A consistent experience across services and applications is king, particularly applications performance and time-to-content everywhere and every time, at every click to a video, website, social network, cloud storage, games, etc.
